Boris Wants To Be My Friend
So the new year begins and the Prime Minister's message is that he wants to be friends with remainers and non-Conservatives and people who didn't vote for him. Well it is a bit jarring to hear it given that the campaign to leave was carried out in the most polarising way possible and the recent election campaign was based on obvious lies and smears. But Johnson has the authority that comes from holding the top job. And he has a mandate to deliver Brexit. It would be churlish to reject the overture out of hand.
But let us see what happens next. For now remainers are simply spectators. We can be as noble or as nasty as we like and it won't affect the results. The agenda is firmly in the hands of the PM. Can he win me over without betraying the trust of the people who have put him where he is? It isn't impossible.
He needs to actually lay out what the plan is. I remain suspicious that there still isn't a plan beyond getting the keys to number 10. And I am already annoyed that so little has been forthcoming in the last couple of weeks. If we are to get behind the programme there has to be clarity as to what the programme is. Leadership is about making decisions even if they are difficult. Putting stuff off because you know people won't like it doesn't get you any respect.
But if the details start coming out and it looks like Brexit is at least deliverable without doing too much harm, maybe I can be won over. Let's see what happens.
